(Strongylodon macrobotrys) with Red Fox Bat (Pteropus scapulatus) Watercolor, colored pencil 12" x 15" While walking through the University of Washington's greenhouse, I came upon a beautiful cluster of flowers hanging from the ceiling. I had never before seen a flower like this, as it’s native only to the Philippines and blooms every two years. The more I discovered about this plant, the more I fell in love with it. Not only is its colors vibrant and beautiful, but the flowers shape when held together look like the wings of a butterfly. This is why the Jade Vine is also known as the butterfly flower. The blossoms only release their scent at night to attract its pollinators...bats. The Giant Red Fox Bat is a natural pollinator to this plant, help- ing an endangered plant continue on. |
