Seattle based artist Andhi Spath uses watercolor, gouache, and pen and ink to render the natural world around him. His current works focus on the global diversity of flora and fauna. From the Great Blue Heron of the Northwest, to the remote Okapi of the Congo, Andhi’s work is striking.

In this illustration of the Okapi, I explored a very typical pose of the animal stretching it’s head upward to feed on tree vegetation. The challenge in this pose was to render the inner bone and muscle sections. With very few images available, I was able to complete this pose through research and using the boxed and wire techniques, as well as anatomical sketches.
